Spend under management

The share of total travel spend that flows through the managed programme. It's usually expressed as a percentage and used as a headline measure of how well the managed travel programme is being adopted across the company. A higher share generally means better visibility, more consistent policy compliance and stronger negotiating leverage with suppliers.

To calculate spend under management, companies compare the amount booked through approved channels — the travel platform, the TMC or preferred suppliers under contract — with total travel spend, including expenses reimbursed through expense reports and corporate cards. The result is expressed as a percentage. Companies usually track it separately for air, hotel and ground transport, since the share under management often differs significantly between categories, with hotels typically the hardest to capture.

Spend under management is one of the most important indicators of a travel programme's maturity. The higher the share, the more accurate the company's data, the stronger its position in supplier negotiations and the better it can fulfil its duty of care. Increasing it usually involves making the managed channel convenient and competitive, integrating it with expense processes and communicating clearly why using it matters. It is also a useful way to measure progress after introducing a new booking platform.

Tumodo helps companies bring more of their travel spend under management. Flights, hotels, rail tickets, car transfers, taxis, car rental and airport services can all be booked on one platform, so there is less need for employees to book elsewhere. Prices come direct from suppliers with no hidden markups, and every booking is recorded automatically in reports, giving companies a clear view of how much of their travel is managed.
