ISO 31030

The international standard giving guidance on travel risk management. It provides a structured framework companies can use to assess, plan for and respond to the risks employees face while travelling for business. Adopting it, or aligning practices to it, is one way companies demonstrate they're taking duty of care seriously.

ISO 31030, titled Travel risk management — Guidance for organizations, was published by the International Organization for Standardization in 2021. It applies to organisations of any size and sector and covers all types of work-related travel. The standard describes how to establish a travel risk management policy, assign responsibilities, assess risks, implement controls such as pre-trip approval and traveller tracking, communicate with travellers and respond to incidents.

Because ISO 31030 is a guidance standard rather than a certifiable requirement, companies use it as a benchmark for their own practices. It helps them identify gaps — for example, the lack of a clear process for approving travel to higher-risk destinations or for locating travellers during a crisis. Aligning with the standard can also help a company demonstrate that it has taken reasonable steps to protect employees, which may be relevant in legal or insurance contexts.

While ISO 31030 describes the framework, companies need practical tools to put it into practice. Tumodo supports several of its elements: travel policies can restrict bookings to or from specific countries and cities, trips can be subject to multi-level approval, all bookings are recorded in one system for full visibility, and travellers receive real-time alerts about flight changes. Tumodo's 24/7 support team helps travellers whenever plans change or unexpected situations arise.
