ESTA
The US electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors. Travellers from participating countries must obtain ESTA approval online before flying to the US under the Visa Waiver Program, rather than applying for a traditional visa. It's typically arranged well ahead of travel and is valid for multiple trips over a set period.
ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization and is operated by US Customs and Border Protection. Travellers apply online, providing passport and personal details and answering eligibility questions. It is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before departure, although many applications are approved much faster. An approved ESTA is generally valid for two years or until the passport expires and allows stays of up to 90 days per visit for business or tourism.
Not every traveller from a Visa Waiver Program country is eligible for ESTA. For example, people who have travelled to certain countries since 2011 or who hold certain dual nationalities may need to apply for a full visa instead. An approved ESTA also does not guarantee entry — the final decision is made by a border officer on arrival. For business travellers, it is important to make sure that the planned activities are permitted under ESTA and that the authorisation is still valid before each trip.
