Direct connect / API connection

A direct technical link to an airline or supplier that bypasses the GDS. It lets a booking platform pull fares and availability straight from the supplier's own system, which can unlock content or pricing not available through traditional GDS channels. Airlines increasingly favour these connections as a way to control how their fares and ancillaries are distributed.

An API (application programming interface) connection allows two systems to exchange data automatically and in real time. In travel distribution, a booking platform connects directly to an airline's reservation system, a hotel chain, an accommodation wholesaler, a rail operator or a transfer provider. The platform sends a search request, receives live prices and availability, and confirms the booking straight into the supplier's system — usually with an instant confirmation and without any intermediary in between.

Direct connections give access to content that may not be available elsewhere and allow suppliers to present their products exactly as they intend. The downside is complexity: every supplier's API is different, has to be maintained and needs its own processes for changes and refunds. That is why most companies do not connect to suppliers themselves but rely on a travel platform that aggregates many connections into one interface. The term API connection is also used more broadly for links between a travel platform and a company's internal systems, such as HR or accounting software.

Tumodo uses both types of connection. On the supply side, the platform brings flights from 500+ airlines, more than 3.5 million accommodation options, rail tickets, car transfers, taxis and airport services into one account. On the company side, Tumodo integrates through an open API with HRIS and accounting systems, including SAP and Oracle, so traveller data is filled in automatically and travel documents flow into the company's own processes without manual input.
